I'm Calvin Leung, an educator with over 40 years of experience in Kindergarten to Grade 12 schools.
Over those 40 years, I've seen just about everything that students, teachers, and parents can go through in math education. Add to that time my own 23 years as a child and student - it adds up to a lot of experiences! Brilliantly successful teachers and students, ones who could "do math" but didn't like it, people who feared math (students, teachers, and parents), adults and kids who didn't see that math was important, the many "I'm not a math person" who became frustrated and/or gave up, etc. For most people, they eventually "ran out" of capacity to retain anymore "math."
Young or old we generally made the same common journey from Kindergarten through to Grade 11 or 12 math. The journey was typically 12 or 13 years of transitions from classroom to classroom. Think back on your own experience, was there a linking theme or schema that connected the learning from one grade to the next or from one concept to another? Probably not. That's what I hope to change with Let's Count On MathTM.
